RNAS Dounreay

Although not directly connected to RAF Wick, the airfield at Dounreay is worthy of a mention.
Below is a scan of a map showing the remaining runway, possibly from around the 1980's. The last runway finally closed at Dounreay in 1993. The site is better known now as a nuclear research facility that is currently undergoing a major clean-up as part of the decommissioning works.

Construction of Dounreay airfield was originally started in 1942, although not completed until 1944.
Originally planned for use by the RAF, Dounreay was passed to the Royal Navy and eventually the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
